George Portz Memorial Scholarship
George Portz Memorial Scholarship
The George Portz Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 2023 to honor the legacy of National “Open” Fiddle Champion George Portz (1952-2023), who dedicated much of his life to mentoring musicians of all ages and keeping traditional bluegrass music thriving. George nurtured the talents of many fiddlers, pickers, and singers, some of whom have gone on to play the Grand Ol’ Opry. This scholarship was created to continue George’s legacy by providing funds to musicians looking to advance their musical talents. Funds (up to $500.00) may be used for lessons, camps, instrument upgrades / repairs, etc. Winners are selected annually and acknowledged at the George Portz Memorial Fiddle Contest and Bluegrass show held on the last Saturday in April, annually, in George's hometown of Shiloh, IL.
